Difference between General Dentists and Dental Specialists

A dentist that has specialized in a certain area is termed as a dental specialist. A general dentist starts practicing right after dental school, while specialists have to undergo additional post-graduate training in the respective field. Dental specialists are required in case complex procedures have to be performed. This means that they restrict their services to a limited number of procedures related to their specific field. On the other hand, general dentists are capable of handling a wide variety of dental procedures and emergencies.

What is general dentistry?

General dentists help people maintain their oral health on a regular basis. Think of the family dentist that you had growing up and would regularly visit for a dental check-up. Such a dentist that is responsible for taking care of all the dental needs of a patient is termed as a general dentist. A general dentist can perform several procedures. They can also provide preventive or restorative care to help patients with dental problems.

When a general dentist specializes in a particular area and focuses only on those procedures, they can be referred to as specialists.

What types of dental specialists exist?

The field of dentistry has a huge scope and goes further beyond general dentistry. There are professionals that specialize in certain niches. Some of the dental specialists that you can choose to consult in case of dental problems include:

  • Orthodontists: Although the most common reason why people see an orthodontist is the installation of braces, they also perform other functions. Orthodontists are responsible for improving the appearance and alignment of teeth to improve their bite.
  • Periodontists: People face several issues related to their gums. This is when a periodontist comes into play. They are equipped to handle all types of dental problems arising from damaged or infected gums.
  • Endodontists: Endodontists perform root canal treatment for patients who have damaged their pulp.
  • Prosthodontists: Damaged or missing teeth have to be replaced with oral prostheses such as crowns, veneers, etc. This may be for cosmetic reasons or improved functionality. Such a dentist that deals with the installation of these artificial prostheses is termed as a Prosthodontist.
  • Pediatric dentists: Growing children require additional dental care. A pediatric dentist is skilled in handling children and addressing their dental problems.
  • Oral surgeons: Oral surgeons are required to perform invasive and complicated surgeries such as biopsies, removal of cancerous tissue, or reconstructive procedures.
  • The specialist may also have certified training in pathology or radiology.

When do you need a specialist?

It may be confusing to decide when to see a specialist. Therefore, it is better to consult a general dentist in case you experience some discomfort. The dentist can diagnose the problem and direct you to a specialist as per your condition. To avoid any major complications or having to see a specialist, it is advisable to visit your general dentist frequently.  This will help you be aware of your oral well-being and take proper preventive measures accordingly.
